3. Write the opening line
Name, age, place and date of death — in the first sentence.
Checklist
- Full name as the first words
- Age at death
- City where the death occurred
- Date of death
- A chosen verb that suits the family
- A recorded decision on naming the cause
Readers scanning the page look for exactly those four facts. Give them up front.
Choose the verb deliberately. 'Died' is plain. 'Passed away' is gentler. 'Entered eternal rest' carries religious weight. All are correct.
You may state a cause of death but are never obliged to. 'After a long illness' or 'unexpectedly' is complete and dignified.
Some families name the cause deliberately — after an overdose or suicide — to reduce stigma. That is a family decision, not a rule.
Avoid euphemisms that read clearly to some audiences and ambiguously to others.

Avoid Never publish a cause of death other close relatives have not agreed to disclose. It cannot be taken back.
